Uhlen Laubach

Uhlen Laubach

Over coarse velvet ocean floors

lies a cloud of cool smoke.

Wind whips herbal spice.

Name

Laubach. The stream (‘Bach’) on which a mill, the Lohmühle, once stood. To accommodate the tanning of cow leather, oak bark was ground here to make tanbark. What does this have to do with the Uhlen? Nothing. But at the Laubach near Koblenz, a geologist discovered an extremely chalky variant of slate that was completely unexpected for that spot. As per geological practice, it was branded with the name of the town of its discovery, appended with “Laubach” as it entered into the specialist literature. And through its presence in Uhlen, out to the wider wine world.

Facts

Geological definition: Devonian, Laubach hill layers. A sandy slate that through its strong calcareous content is colored up to 10% gray. Many stones contain fossils from mussels and coral that found enough oxygen to thrive in the shallow water. With the layers of the Laubach, we come to the end of our “Devonian” range: The ocean, which once plunged to 10 km in depth, ultimately filled with sediments. We cultivate three parcels here, totaling 2.5 ha. Orientation: SSW, elevation 75 - 240 m, slope 100 to 150%, average age of vines: over 50 years. A strong portion is ungrafted. Classification: VDP.GROSSE LAGE.

The wine is exclusively vinified with wild yeasts in wooden barrels and absolutely no addition of enzymes or fining agents, and ages at least until summer of the year following harvest on the lees. The Uhlen Laubach wine is produced dry and bears the designation of VDP.GROSSES GEWÄCHS. In notable years residually sweet Auslesen, Beerenauslesen and Trockenbeerenauslesen are also produced here.

Reviews

“Although this is a dry riesling from the Mosel, it has a very Burgundian personality with stunning textural complexity and a waxy quality to the nose that’s quite unlike anything else from this region. Huge power and depth, yet restrained right through the imposing finish. Gloriously untypical!” James Suckling  ▄  “Slender giant. Smoky whispers on the palate. Deep, intense and with a touch of curry. Searing an unforgettable scar into the aromatic memory forever. Incredible.” FAZ ▄ “Aromas reminiscent of peach, citrus fruits and herbs with a cool, intense minerality. The complex palate is concentrated, powerful and juicy, with an elegant acidity, playful herbal aromas and a taut, mineral-driven structure. Incredible depth, perfect balance, and exceptionally long finish." wein-plus. ▄ "Aromas of vineyard peach and pepper. Flawless." U. Sauter
