Uhlen Roth Lay

Uhlen Roth Lay

Laden with iron

the mysterious ship sails

through the illuminated night

Name

The mountain top that crowns the terraces of the Uhlen is the highest around and is known in the local dialect as the Roth Lay. What a lady! Partake in a bit of wine — the reports on this point are plentiful — and watch her emerge from the misty slate as a red-curled beauty of a cliff. Ocher, red, violet. The higher the terraces, the more majestically colorful their illumination of the Mosel Valley.

The Roth Lay is enveloped in an aura of mystery. In its tropical reds shine primordial islands sunken in the sea. Iron and manganese wend through the cliff walls like magical runes, and heavy, iron-rich stones feed speculation that a meteor struck here.

Facts

Geological definition: Devonian, Ems quartzite and High Rhine layers. The color of the stone varies as one moves up the slope from gray to various red tones. The cliff is extremely hard, although a soft, clayey band courses through here and there.

We cultivate four parcels here, totaling 1.6 ha. Orientation: South, elevation 75 - 220 m, slope 100 to 150%, average age of vines: over 60 years, with a strong portion ungrafted. Classification: VDP.GROSSE LAGE.

The wine is exclusively vinified with wild yeasts in wooden barrels and absolutely no addition of enzymes or fining agents, and ages at least until summer of the year following harvest on the lees. The Uhlen Roth Lay wine is produced dry and bears the designation of VDP.GROSSES GEWÄCHS. In notable years, Uhlen Roth Lay is home to residually sweet Auslesen, Beerenauslesen and Trockenbeerenauslesen.

Reviews

“The unrelenting siren of the Terrace Moselle combs her dark hair and looks deep into your eyes - until you've run aground." S.Pigott ▄ "It has a similar structure to the fullest mature white burgundy" J. Robinson ▄ "Incredible mineral richness with subtle notes of iron in the finish. A truly phenomenal terroir.” La revue  de vin de France ▄ “The Montrachet from the Mosel” wein-plus
